Be a Big... make a difference in the life of a Little from Pleasant Ridge Montessori! You have what it takes to be a Big if you would enjoy serving as a positive role model, supporting and encouraging a child in need, helping a child develop new skills and having fun! Littles are students at Pleasant Ridge Montessori School ages 9-12 who will benefit from the extra support that a consistent, adult friend can provide. Mentoring takes place weekly from September through May on Wednesdays, from 5:00-6:30 pm, with dinner included. As a Big, you will meet with the same child once a week in a group setting. You and your Little will have opportunities to interact one-to-one, with other matched pairs, and with the entire group. We provide a variety of games and activities for you and your Little to learn from and enjoy. We provide mentor training and ongoing support and coaching. Together, we help children reach their potential by connecting them with caring, adult role models who guide them in making positive choices about their future. Activities bring joy to our families in many ways. You could plan an activity such as a craft, a game night or putting on a show in our theatre. This program provides a much-needed lift to our House and our guest families. These guidelines will help you in planning your activity: ♥ Please limit your group size to no more than 10 people. ♥ Please bring any equipment or materials you will need with you. We do not have any kind of a sound system, but you are welcome to bring in your own. ♥ Home-baked foods are not permitted to be brought into our House. If edible items are required for your activity, those items must be store bought and shelf stable. ♥ We schedule activity times from 6:30 – 8:30 PM Sunday through Thursday and weekends 10:30 a.m. – noon. ♥ Unfortunately, we cannot predict the number of people who will participate in your activity. The health and hospital schedules of our guests can fluctuate daily. Because a majority of the children are inpatient or in isolation here at the House, you can expect somewhere between one and twenty people to attend. Ages will range from infant to adult with the majority of kids being elementary school aged. ♥ This volunteer service to the House is usually a two-hour time commitment. Please contact us if you would like to spend more time on a special project. ♥ To respect the varied faiths and backgrounds in our House, all programs should be nondenominational. ♥ Performances and activities are for the benefit of our guest families only. Please do not bring additional ‘”audience” members to your performances. ♥ Volunteer groups are restricted to only the common areas of the House and cannot enter a guest’s room at any time. ♥ We are unable to support community restitution or court ordered volunteers at this time. ♥ For the safety of our guest families, ALL visitors should be healthy - free from fever, cough or colds, or stomach virus symptoms. After-School Program Volunteers help take our dynamic program to the next level! You start your day by greeting the excited, chattering students arriving from school. After reminding a few of them to check in and get put their bags in their cubbies, you sit down to play a round of Uno with a few children. When you hear the music start you help clean up and guide the children to Circle Time. After a few energetic songs and a Bible lesson, the group divides up into grade groups to begin rotating through stations. During academics you assist with homework, at snack you enjoy a special treat and pleasant conversation and finally, you share in an enrichment activity. From crafts to walking field trips to a simple yoga lesson or science experiment, there is always something new and engaging during this time. You truly must witness the expressions from the students as they meet their mentors each day. The Al Hampton Mentoring Program is an academically structured program that pairs a student with a mentor from the community. The program services students in grades first through fourth. There are seven, 30-minute sessions a day beginning at 8:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday. We ask our mentors to give 30 minutes a week, but often, our mentors stay for more than one session. Our mentors need no background check and all work is prepared in individual binders for each student. There is an entrance directly into the Hampton Mentoring Room and the students are brought into the room so it is very convenient. The Hampton Program boasts Mentors who have generously given of their time for over ten, fifteen, and twenty years! They are truly amazing, dedicated people. The program coordinator, a twenty-year veteran of teaching, has never seen such a successful, motivational program that affects academic success. Besides progress and growth, the students’ behavior and attendance are better. It is difficult to put into words the sense of trust and respect that the students have for their mentors. The relationships that are formed are touching. A “five year” mentor mentioned that she gets so much more out of mentoring than she feels like she gives. Another mentor stated that the 30 minutes he spent at Oyler was the best 30 minutes of his week. The mentors, with their one-on-one attention, make a huge difference in the lives of our children. Jill began volunteering at ProKids as a CASA Volunteer in 2010 because, she said, “I could no longer look away.” “I knew that we had a challenge in our community and I’ve been privileged to serve nine different children since I began as a CASA Volunteer,” Jill says. “I do it because I can give forgotten children like Jasmine a voice. Jasmine has been surrounded with violence. Her mother was accused of stabbing her father. And the 4-year-old had been terribly neglected. She hadn’t been to the doctor and didn’t have any immunizations. She hadn’t been to the dentist and ended up needing teeth pulled as well as needing crowns. She hadn’t been to preschool and wasn’t ready for kindergarten. The mother, who has had three other children removed from her care, was not cooperating with any services. As a CASA Volunteer, getting to know Jasmine and what she needs has been Jill’s primary focus. “We enjoy one another’s company,” Jill says. “She sees me interact with her mother, her father and with a babysitter who she knows well. She knows that I get along with everyone. That’s not something she sees all the time.” Jill and the rest of the ProKids team isn’t yet sure what is going to happen to Jasmine. But, Jill says, “I know we will get her where she needs to be. In big ways and small ways, we make sure that children are safe and secure. We’re looking for experienced volunteers to help care for our children while their parents attend classes during the day and life skills workshops in the evening. Our daycare is open Monday-Friday from 6:00 am-6:00 pm, and we also look for volunteers weekday evenings several times a month from 5:30-8:30.
