Volunteer tutors will assist students with homework and/or classroom assignments two hours per week, either at Gabriel’s Place in Avondale (3618 Reading Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45229) or Hughes High School (2515 Clifton Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45219). Volunteers are welcome to devote more than two hours per week of tutoring depending on their schedule.

Students in the Academic Intervention program get individualized or small group instruction on critical fundamental skills like reading, phonics, writing, vocabulary, math, science and social studies. Most of these students are already behind their grade-level standards and without early intervention they risk failing or dropping out of school.

Children benefit from playing tennis by being involved in a healthy activity. They learn focus, discipline, hard work, goal setting, structure, and good sportsmanship. It helps their self-confidence grow while they have fun, make new friends, and learn new skills

In addition, as part of a federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant at Carson School, FamiliesFORWARD provides intensive tutoring and homework help for up to 50 targeted students. The intensive Homework Help program uses certified teachers (often retired) to reteach math and literacy skills through the homework designated by students’ daytime classroom teachers. Tutors typically work with small groups of students several times a week.

FamiliesFORWARD is always in search of volunteer tutors who would enjoy working one-on-one or in small groups with students. Companies, college students, and others are all welcome to give their time to help students who are struggling to understand reading, math and other learning concepts.

These volunteers allow us to meet the individual needs of as many students as possible by teaching private or small group lessons for beginner, intermediate, or advanced students. (clarinet; flute; violin; viola; cello; bass).
